I was recently testing Magento Commerce on the Mac and went through an afternoon of headaches trying to get it to work on XAMPP.
Problem: When using XAMPP on mac os x the following message appears:
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, you@example.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Solution: Use MAMP instead.
That really is it. When I installed the file system on the MAMP powered apache server it worked fine the first time.
